Artist’s statement:

I am obsessed with eyes. Since I was a child, I always drew eyes in different shapes and expression. This one is looking at you in adoration. It could good, or bad. And that goes back to my original inspiration & fascination of the classic evil eye jewelry.

I was first introduced to this superstition belief when I heard my friend in high school saying to someone: “Ah, you’re gonna give me the evil eye with this joke!”. At first, I laughed at him as it sounded silly and didn’t understand the meaning of it. He laughed too, but also laughed at how innocent I was. I can never thank him enough for explaining to me the meaning and the culture behind this hex.

He explained to me: “People can be monsters, M. Someone’s jealousy can be so powerful that it can curse you with misfortune & give you really bad luck. Always watch your back man! Trust nobody. Keep your success quiet, and never flaunt it. That’s why my family always keeps an evil eye charm on them!”
